family tradition
I have been geeking out at Girl Talk shows for a couple years now and so to commemorate what will be my fourth and fifth shows this weekend, I'm posting pictures of my very first show back on January 13th, 2007 at the Echo.
I went with my friend Mary who no longer lives in LA but who, for that entire fall and winter, was pretty much the number one thing I had going on in my life. She made this show as fun as it was for me and I'll never forget this night as long as I live.
It was uncharacteristically freezing that night and we had on layers and layers of clothing. We found hats in my car, bought mittens at the Walgreens on the corner and sat there for hours waiting to score tickets. We wound up getting two of the last ones.
Then the show, which was... off the fucking chains. Two hours of rubbing up against strangers in a good, non-sexual way.
God, I had nutritional problems at that juncture in my life. Look at me. I look like I have an After School Special coming my way.
Anyway, thinking about this show and Mary today I realize that Girl Talk shows have always been a marker for me in this city. It's like each year of my life is bookended with a weekend of Gillis-related debauchery. And it's always exactly what I need to pull me out of whatever frenzy I've worked myself in to.
I can't wait. And I hope he uses "Put a Ring On It" and "Whatever You Like" more than anything.
